For more than 20 years Deane Smith, founder and owner of South Jersey Safety, has worked in safety and health. He has managed safety programs at the corporate, regional, and site levels in manufacturing, agriculture, construction, and public facilities. He has provided safety service to major construction projects in the Philadelphia area, including the Kimmel Center and the Phillies Ballpark. He has provided safety services at industrial sites, including steel manufacturing, oil refining, food processing, and pharmaceutical research and manufacturing. He has been responsible for the safety and health of more than 4,000 individuals.


Over the course of his career, Mr. Smith has:


  • Reduced OSHA incident rates and associated worker compensation costs.

  • Managed site safety programs on multi-employer sites in construction, steel, oil refining, food processing, hazardous material clean-up, and pharmaceutical industries.

  • Audited construction, manufacturing, research, agriculture, and office locations for hazards, regulatory compliance, and safety management performance.

  • Trained managers, field staff, employee safety committees, and site employees.

  • Managed construction and general industry OSHA inspections and resolved compliance violations.

  • Provided independent case evaluations of safety hazards and responsibilities based on the principles and practices of injury prevention established by safety authorities and has testified on the evaluations in court.

  • Designed, implemented, and coordinated the corporate ergonomics training program for a Fortune 500 company.

  • Designed more than 40 workstations or system improvements to accommodate or prevent employee injury.

  • Oversaw 300 occupational safety, health, and ergonomics improvement projects.

  • Led significant incident investigations including falls, machine guarding, confined space injuries, lockout, pressure test failure, hazardous materials handling, electrical incidents, scaffolding, and excavations.

  • Prepared a contractor-specific safety toolbox talk manual.

  • Directed the field work of site safety coordinators.
