For more than 20 years Deane Smith, founder and owner of South Jersey Safety, has worked in safety and health. He has managed safety programs at the corporate, regional, and site levels in manufacturing, agriculture, construction, and public facilities. He has provided safety service to major construction projects in the Philadelphia area, including the Kimmel Center and the Phillies Ballpark. He has provided safety services at industrial sites, including steel manufacturing, oil refining, food processing, and pharmaceutical research and manufacturing. He has been responsible for the safety and health of more than 4,000 individuals.
Mr. Smith received his B.S. in mechanical engineering from Drexel University. He is a licensed professional engineer (PE045836E) and holds an Associate in Risk Management (ARM), issued by the Insurance Society of America. He has completed more than 40 health, safety, and risk management professional development programs.
He is authorized by the U.S. Department of Labor to teach OSHA’s 10-hour and 30-hour Outreach classes in Construction and General Industry. He teaches Hazardous Waste and Emergency Response classes privately and through an area college.
His active professional memberships include the American Industrial Hygiene Association, the American Society of Safety Engineers, the Mid-Atlantic Construction Safety Council, the National Fire Protection Association, and the National Safety Council.
He has worked as a tradesman, an engineer, and safety director. He has designed equipment and work stations, evaluated worksites with respect to injuries, and implemented feasible solutions to identified hazards. His varied body of work brings a unique perspective of how to foster safety and health in the work environment, products, and our daily lives.
